After suffering years of abuse from her violent husband in Pakistan, Samia Sarwar decided to seek a divorce. Her parents, in a horrifying effort to preserve family honor, arranged for the ultimate punishment. Samia was shot dead on April 6, 1999. Although circumstances of her death are well known, the police have never laid charges.
Under the present circumstances, different world religions have been forced to take account of others. The pleasant option now is to develop a new understanding of the relation between world religions and global cultures-one that allows people to share their wisdom with each other through mutual respect and understanding.
It’s a city laden with dirt and filth; it’s a city with acute poverty; it’s a city with high levels of pollution and yet it’s a city loved by all its inhabitants. That’s Kolkata for most of us who stay or once used to stay in what is often referred to as “The City of Joy”.
